We all have goals we want to set, but unfortunately it can be hard to actually achieve them.
Where do I start?
How do I not get overwhelmed?
Can this even be done?
We’ve all thought the same thoughts when it comes to setting goals.
Well, I’m here to tell you that no matter how big your goal is you can achieve it, as long as you break it down and organize your path from point A to point B to point C and so on.
Most people don’t think about actually organizing their goal into manageable steps and then they just jump all over the place.
This usually ends in overwhelm, quitting, or a slow path to achieving their end goal.
When you organize your big goal and break it down into bit size pieces it makes the whole goal more manageable. With each mini goal you achieve you get a new sense of accomplishment and drive. These ultimately are the fuel that keeps you moving towards your big goal.
To make this process easier to understand I created the ACHIEVE method. Each letter of the word achieve is broken down into steps. Let’s jump into it.
A = Abandon Fear
We all have excuses we tell ourselves when it comes to working towards our goal.
“It’s Wednesday and I already had cake and cookies. I’ll start my workout plan next Monday.”
“I don’t have the money.”
“It’s just a dream. It will never be my reality.”
“I can’t do it.”
We tell ourselves these things over and over again and accept it as reality when it’s really just a crap load of bull. To achieve any goal, this has to stop.
For step 1 (Abandon Fear) write down all your excuses and then go back through and write down why your excuse is actually false.
Excuse – I can’t do it.
Truth – With passion and determination I can do anything.
Don’t go getting the wrong idea thought. Just because you make this list doesn’t mean your fear is going to disappear like a magic trick. It’ll still be there and that’s ok.
Courage isn’t the absent of fear, but the ability to keep moving in the midst of it.
C = Choose 1 Big Goal
The main reason you, or anyone else, can never seem to achieve their New Year’s resolution is because you have too many goals set at one time.
This spreads you too thin. In order to actually achieve your goal and keep you from getting overwhelmed you need to choose your 1 big goal and focus on just that.
Once you have organized your big goal, spent time establishing a routine, and have weeks or months of consistency working towards it then you can add in a secondary small goal, but ONLY THEN. If you don’t have that foundation set, you’ll end up overwhelmed and possibly quitting.
So, choose 1 big goal, and I mean BIG. Don’t hold back. Let me say that again.
DON’T HOLD BACK!
This goal should be so big that it scares you a little (or a lot). As you process this, you’re probably going to think up excuses why this goal is impossible. Well, when that happens reference step 1, Abandon Fear.
H – Highlight Steps
Now you need to take that BIG GOAL and break it down into steps, or what I call Mini-Goals. Each of these goals/steps will get you from where you are now to the moment in the future where your big goal has become your reality.
- Save x Amount of Money
- Create Product
- Apply for Licensing
- Get Business Insurance etc.
This step will adapt and change over time as you work towards your goal. After a few accomplished mini goals, you may find that you need to shift a few of these steps to better fit your end goal. That’s ok. Be flexible with it just don’t break.
I – Instill Commitment
The one thing that will kill your success in an instant, is putting it off. We’ve all said it.
“I’ll start working out next week.”
“I’ll go back to school next year.”
“I’ll start my business one day.”
Now is the time to commit to achieving your goal NO MATTER WHAT. This means you need to make a plan. So, take your mini goals from above and think about how you will achieve those. What are you going to do every day, week, and month to get closer and closer to your goal becoming your reality? Don’t focus too much on dates, just focus on taking 1 step each and every day. Examples; wake up at 5am every weekday and work on my business for 2 hours, join a workout class 3x a week, save X amount of money every paycheck.
The reason I say don’t focus too much on dates is because they can be a huge stumbling block on your road to success.
Say you set a mini goal of writing 3 chapters of your book by December. Well what happens when December comes around and you only finished 2 chapters? Yep you end up feeling disappointed, bummed, and like a complete failure all because you were 1 chapter shy of meeting your “time goal”.
This can be detrimental for some, or most, people. Instead I want you to focus on the positives of this journey. In this situation you should be celebrating the fact that you wrote 2 chapters, you consistently worked towards your goal each and every day, and you all around crushed it. You didn’t walk away; you didn’t let your excuses keep you from working your butt off. You did it. Focus on that.
E – Ensure Success
Most of the time we can be our own worst enemy. We see every fault, failure, and mistake then magnify it 10 fold. We give those things more power than we should. This ends up with us giving up on our goal in the blink of an eye. To ensure your success choose someone and tell them your BIG goal. Make sure that whoever you choose will understand why achieving this goal is important to you, will be supportive in every way, will help you overcome obstacles, and will be willing to help keep you accountable. Whatever you do, don’t choose someone who gets jealous over someone else’s success or who doesn’t understand your passion behind this goal.
V – Visualize Your Future
This is where things get FUN! I want you to take 10 minutes and visualize your future. What does it look like when you’ve reached this goal? Where are you living, how has this goal changed your family, do your finances look different, what does your mental or physical health look like? Go big with this vision and then write it down. When you hit a roadblock on the way to achieving your goal, come back and read what YOUR future will look like. This will help you keep going when things get hard.
E = Erupt in Celebration
Every time you achieve one of your goals you deserve to pamper yourself. Whether it’s the accomplishment of a mini goal or the majestic achievement of your BIG GOAL you deserve to celebrate. In this last step you get to decide on what those prizes will be. I like to have smaller prizes for my mini goals and then a monster of a prize for my big goal. This is because most of the time your big goal will take year(s) to accomplish so for me I want a ‘dream come true’ type of prize for myself at that point. You deserve it too so, don’t skimp yourself.
- Mini Goal Prize
- New Article of Clothing
